As a specialised centre in MS, NMSC is committed to playing an active role in scientific research.

Research covers several areas.

  1. Clinical studies with MS medication are perhaps the best known. These studies usually take place in an international context, at the initiative of pharmaceutical companies.
  2. A recent and new avenue in scientific research is research into the intestinal flora in MS. An FWO project in collaboration with the universities of Brussels and Leuven is currently under way.
  3. Scientific research also focuses on MS-related complaints such as fatigue, impaired concentration and movement disorders. These are investigated in depth and sometimes treated as part of clinical studies. New rehabilitation techniques with robotics can also be tested in this context.

Against this commitment from the NMSC, however, there is no structural funding. The centre depends on grants for research projects and researchers, financial resources through sponsored clinical trials by the pharmaceutical industry, donations...
